After obtaining his Ph.D. on the processing of ceramics from Cambridge University, Prof. Kara has started to work in Anadolu University (now Eskisehir Technical University) in close cooperation with the industry. He was the founding director of Ceramic Research Centre, the first university-industry joint research centre of Turkey. He served as the director of this centre for 12 years until 2010, managing many projects for the member companies. The main motivation of his research activities is to commercially exploit their results to add value to society. All of his 5 registered patents have been used by national and international companies. He has been a consultant to one of the largest ceramic groups in Turkey. He is also an entrepreneur who has founded MDA Advanced Ceramics Company together with his colleagues in 2003 and lately Decoppo Ceramic Technologies on its own. His recent research activities are concentrated on functional materials and surfaces, particularly, for ceramic tiles.

A materials scientist by training, Dr Kara has over 18 years of combined experience in low carbon sustainable technologies, critical metals research in energy generation supply chain, carbon footprint, life cycle assessment (LCA) and management, materials security, energy efficiency and renewable energy, waste management, and research and development covering industries from metallurgy to materials, chemical, energy and buildings. He is an expert Evaluator for EU research and development funding streams including Horizon 2020, FP7 (NMT, Env), Eureka, Eurostars, CorNet and Eco-Innovation for the European Commission. Dr. Kara is the founder of Metsims Sustainability Consulting and UK Ecolabel Centre. He sits on the technical committee of the International EPD System and is head of research at Turkish Green Building Council. He has a Doctor of Philosophy in Materials from the University of Oxford, BSc and MSc degrees from Istanbul Technical University.
